Foul shooting contest

A "21" contest sponsored by Costello Insurance Company will be held April 28 at the Haverhill High School gym. The two-person per team event is open to all ages and will serve as a fundraiser for the Haverhill High boys' basketball team. Cost is $15 per team. Prizes awarded to winners of each division. Senior baseball tryouts

Haverhill Senior Baseball holds an open tryout for its 16- to 19-year-old summer teams Saturday, May 5 at Haverhill Stadium. Players whose last names begin with letters A-L report at 1 p.m. Players with last names beginning in M-Z report at 3:30 p.m. High school players with games May 5 should report to Haverhill Stadium May 6 at 1 p.m. Players will be selected for the Post 4 American Legion team as well as three additional Senior Babe Ruth teams. Softball wins

Lisa Betances and Katelyn Demers each banged out two RBIs in the Hillies' 6-4 win over Chelmsford in Merrimack Valley Conference softball action. Betances went 2 for 3 with a triple, while sophomore pitcher Alicia Briggs notched the win.

Boys lacrosse edged

The Hillie boys' lacrosse team lost to Tyngsboro, 6-5. Sean Nolan led the Brown and Gold with two goals and two assists. Nick Vazquez had two assists. Tom Murray, Rich MacLeod and Chris Abate also scored Haverhill (0-2) goals. Mike MacLeod chipped in with an assist and goalie Cody Skinner had 11 saves in defeat.

Girls track finishes fifth

The Haverhill High girls' track team scored 51 points to place fifth among 12 teams in the 12th annual Tewksbury Invitational. Central Catholic captured the team title with 118 points.

Sprinter Samantha Stabile and distance ace Alicia Fannon led the Brown and Gold. Stabile won the 100 meters (13.21) and finished sixth in the high jump (4-8), while Fannon placed second in the 2-mile (11:55.62) and ran a leg on the victorious 4 x 800-meter relay team with the Fullerton sisters, Mary and Beth, and Jen Racine. The fast foursome clocked 10:17.25 for the 8-lap event.

Along with running the 4 x 800 relay, Racine placed third in the mile in 5:25.52, slightly ahead of freshman Mary Fullerton who was fifth in 5:29.14. Beth Fullerton placed fifth in the 800 meters, clocking 2:27.30.

The Hillies distance medley relay team of Devin Tatro, Kelsey Garvey, Elyssa Penney and Colleen Garvey placed second in 13:45.38. Senior Colleen McNaughton placed fifth in the 2-mile (12:12.8), as did Wanda Latorella in the 300-meter hurdles (52.72).

Girls lacrosse falls

The Hillie girls' lacrosse team fell to Triton, 13-4. Erin Foley, Jamie Styrczula, Theresa Whittredge and Jackie Hutchinson netted Haverhill (0-2) goals and Moire O'Mullane added an assist. Goalie Laura Hennesesy made 16 saves in defeat.

Baseball drops two

The Whittier Tech baseball team dropped its first two games of the season, falling to Methuen, 9-4, and Amesbury, 4-3, in a pair of non-league games. Against Methuen, Luis Maisonet hit a home run for the Wildcats. In the loss to Amesbury, Thane Sanford had two hits and an RBI and Clint Clay also had two hits to lead Whittier's offense.

Perella leads Whittier frosh

The Whittier Tech freshman baseball team defeated Shawsheen Tech, 6-3. Pitcher Dante Perella hurled a complete-game victory, striking out 11 batters. Steve Surette had a big game at bat, knocking two hits and three RBIs for the Wildcats.

College tracksters shine

Sean Dolan led Northern Essex Community College track athletes at the Bryant University Invitational in Smithfield, R.I. Dolan finished second in the discus with a toss of 119-3. Distance runner Geoff Wahome placed third in the 10,000 meters, clocking 35:48.97 for the 6.2-mile race, and Tyler Pagley spun the discus a personal-best 106-1 for sixth place. Also, Stephanie Naffah ran well in the 100- and 200-meter dashes.

In other Knights' track action, sophomore Laura Rudd qualified for the junior college national championships in both the 1,500 and 5,000 meters at the Corsair Classic at UMass Dartmouth. Rudd established school records in each event as she placed eighth in the 1,500 (5:35.99) and fourth in the 5,000 (20:20.90).

In addition, former Haverhill High standout Seneyda Morel ran well in the 100 meters while, on the men's side, Carlos Olivera placed third in the 400, ran a personal-best time (23.61) in the 200 meters and was seventh in the long jump. Doug Bailey had a season-best 12.10 in the 100 and 24.38 in the 200.

Skinner sparks Brooks

Alex Skinner won his match at first singles to lead the Brooks School tennis team past Rivers, 6-2.

Verrington, Dunham pace runners

Dan Verrington and Dave Dunham of Bradford finished fourth and seventh, respectively, in the SEA 5K Road Race in Concord, N.H. Verrington clocked 16:32 for the 3.1-mile course and captured first place in the Masters age group (40-49). Dunham ran 16:46 and was the second Masters finisher.

Baseball registration

The city's Recreation Department is accepting registrations for its instructional baseball program for children ages 5 to 8. Registration can be done online at www.ci.haverhill.ma.us. Information is available by calling 978-374-2388.

Riverside-Bradford Baseball is offering a 13-year-old intermediate division in addition to traditional Haverhill Senior Baseball this season. Diamonds tryouts

Pool hours

Adult lap swim at the Charles C. White Pool at Haverhill High is Monday through Friday, 5:30 to 7 a.m., and on Sundays, 1 to 3 p.m. Family recreation swim is Sundays, 1 to 3 p.m. Cost is $3 per swimmer. Groups of 10 or more, $2 per swimmer.
