Hillie football players recognized
Haverhill High senior Justin Cook earned All-Merrimack Valley Conference Football first-team honors. Cook, a prolific wide receiver, led the area in receptions (53), touchdown passes (nine) and receiving yards (937). In the Hillies' Thanksgiving Day win over Lowell, Cook hauled in 10 passes -- including two for touchdowns -- for 199 yards.
Junior running back Noel Figuereo and senior offensive lineman Cody Skinner were named MVC second-team offense honorees. Figuereo led the Brown and Gold in rushing with 700 yards, averaging 6.3 yards per carry.
Junior Dan Triplett, a defensive lineman, earned second-team defensive honors, while senior Peter Byron and junior Joe Natale received honorable mention nods. Byron completed 75 passes, including nine for touchdowns, and threw for 1,191 yards.
Knights split in hoops action
The Northern Essex Community College men's basketball team defeated Central Maine Community College, 74-72, and fell to Roxbury Community College, 83-71, in a pair of road games.
Northern Essex trailed Central Maine 37-28 at halftime, but Anthony Griffin scored 11 straight points during a Knights' 14-1 second-half run which changed the game's momentum and lifted the Knights to their sixth win of the season. Griffin netted a team-high 27 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. Sophomore Justin Cook collected 10 points, 13 assists and three steals. Jesus Montero added four points, four rebounds and five steals. Dominique Houston had three steals and played solid defense for the Knights (6-2).
In the loss to Roxbury, Griffin continued his fine play as he pumped in 23 points, giving him 50 in two games, and had 10 rebounds. Montero chipped in with 17 points, 11 rebounds and two steals. Tyler Pagley played a strong all-around game in defeat for the Knights.
Sicard shines for Lady Knights
Behind Mary Sicard's team-high 21 points, the Northern Essex Community College women's basketball downed Springfield Tech, 74-57. Kaleigh Sullivan added 10 points and pulled down 13 rebounds. Former Whittier Tech standout Brandi Badgett-Fernandez collected 15 points and seven assists for the Lady Knights (3-3).
In other action, Northern Essex fell to Roxbury Community College, 72-67. Sicard pumped in 26 points and dished out nine assists. She had offensive help from Badgett-Fernandez, who collected 14 points and eight assists, and Sarah Dubois, who pumped in 14 points and had eight rebounds. The Lady Knights trailed by as many as 17 points in the game and cut the deficit to one point in the final minutes before falling short in the end.
Skinner nets 20
Alex Skinner scored a career-high 20 points to lead Brooks School past Pingree, 60-50. Brooks trailed by 14 points early in the first half but rallied for the win in its first game of the 2007-08 season. Skinner netted his team's first 11 points of the second half and hit five 3-pointers for the game. He had 17 second-half points.
Landers wins two matches
Brooks School senior wrestler Guy Landers recorded a pair of pins in his team's tri-meet split with St. Mark's and Tabor Academy.
Boys' Club floor hockey
Daniel Dominquez scored three goals to lead Haverhill Kiwanis Club past Messinger Chiropractic, 8-1, in Haverhill Boys' Club pee-wee floor hockey action. Michael Guarino and John Vets netted two goals apiece and Sean Bresnahan added one for the winners. Christian Page scored Messinger Chiropractic's goal.
Cooper Gibbs netted four goals for Sparky's Wings in the team's 7-4 win over the Law Office of Cheryl Menzies. Daniel Howell, Matt McKiel and Justin McKiel added one goal apiece for Sparky's. Brogs McGover found the back of the net four times in defeat.
Brandon Erelli potted three goals and William Becker and Shea Bruneau scored one goal apiece to lift Dempsey's Insurance over Wilson Screen Printing, 5-2. Justin Galicia notched two goals for Wilson Screen Printing.

Hoops travel team openings
The Haverhill Youth Basketball travel program has openings for its 5th-grade boys' travel team. The team participates in the Merrimack Valley Travel League with games starting in December and running through March. For information, contact Rob Simpson at 978-618-5323.
